Arua

The name “Arua” of “Aru” means “prison”. The British administrative headquarters was established here when they acquired West Nile from the Belgians in 1914. They wanted to bring the entire Nile Valley under British control.

Arua – geographically isolated and politically neglected – is located in the West Nile region, because only one bridge connects the West Nile region with the rest of Uganda.

There are several local ethnic groups living there: the largest groups are the Kakwa, Madi, Alur and Lugbara, and additionally refugees, especially from South Sudan, such as the Dinkas, Kuku, Nuer and Siluk.
